PRESENT COMFORT

Hope and Encouragement for Grief

...you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.
John 16:20 (NIV)

We grieve because we love.

If we did not love, our heart would not be broken by the death of one we love. Grief is often referred to as a journey. The journey begins when one we love dies. Though the journey does not come with a precise roadmap, along the way we find answers to some of the most difficult questions of life and death through prayer, introspection, and soul-searching. We near the end of the journey when we move beyond our grief toward hope and new life.

I hope that you will allow me to serve as your guide and walk beside you on your journey through grief. This is a place for your personal comfort, encouragement, and support as you encounter many of the practical, spiritual, and emotional challenges of grief. My hope is that you will use the books, blogs, daily devotionals, prayers, and grief group media to lead you toward renewed hope, recovered love, and belief in the future.

Darkness and Light

Presumably each person poised to see the recent eclipse possessed some understanding of what happens when the moon passes between the earth and the sun, blocking the view of the sun as it passes. Yet seeing the eclipse was different for each person. No two people saw exactly the same thing at exactly the same time. No two photos look the same. During the four minutes of totality, likely each one viewing the eclipse had some private, personal experience, whether intellectual, visceral or spiritual, whether joy, awe, wonder, or a profound sense of the vast universe set in motion by the God of all creation.

Victimization: Day 2

The LORD struck the child that Uriah’s wife bore to David, and it became very ill. David therefore pleaded with God for the child; David fasted, and went in and lay all night on the ground.
2 Samuel 12:15-16 NRSV

Thought

The biblical narrative for the next five days describes the victimization and incipient grief of David, an acclaimed warrior, musician, and poet of many psalms. The actions of David at the illness and subsequent death of his beloved son may remind you of your struggle through grief. When you are a victim, you act and react, especially when calamity strikes your life. Perhaps, like David, you pleaded with God to spare the life of your loved one or to reverse the circumstances in some way. It is likely that the ground of David’s resting place was cold, hard, and dirty—perhaps not unlike the uncomfortable sofa or hospital recliner that may have been your resting place for days or weeks. In the identity of David, God speaks to you through this story about the human experience of death and grief.

Prayer

God, grief is so real yet so abstract. Thank you for the story of David. His response to victimization enlightens my own. Amen.

Assurance

I trust God’s plan for life.

Grief Groups

For many, a grief group can be a safe emotional and spiritual place that provides grief understanding and deep fellowship with others who are experiencing grief. Though a grief group is not for everyone, those who need direction and guidance often find the way forward through grief in the context of a confidential grief group community. Group leaders are encouraged to use the resources available on this website for inspiration as they offer their personal support and spiritual care to those who grieve.
