Festival: Day 1

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people.”
Luke 2:10 NRSV

Thought

Christmas may evoke memories that trigger or sustain your grief. The contrast between sorrow and celebration is almost unbearable because many of your best memories are perhaps in the context of holiday celebrations. You may be painfully aware of the absence of your loved one, who likely was among the most important people in your interpersonal sphere. You endow Christmas with emotional power as you remember the past with intense yearning for the one whose presence brought such joy to your life.

Prayer

God, you calm my fears through the voice of those who speak to me of comfort at Christmas. I am grateful for the good news of great joy that overcomes death and grief. Amen.

Assurance

God knows my heart as I grieve at Christmas.
