Peter claimed to be the most loyal of all the disciples. He protested loudly and energetically that he would never betray Jesus. Yet Peter was human. When he found himself alone by the fire—the only male friend who accompanied Christ to his humiliation and trial—he was quick and vehement in his denial when others confront him about his relationship with Jesus. Jesus had foretold Peter’s betrayal. When Peter heard the cock crow, he realized what he had done. Peter grieved the error of his ways constructively. He left and wept bitterly. Ultimately, he forgave himself. In the power of forgiveness, Peter lived to become the rock upon which the Christian church was built.
