When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” Luke 2:15 NRSV

Thought

When the angels appeared to the shepherds, they were at first incredulous and then overcome with fear. After the moment of announcement, awe, and wonder, they talked it over and decided to go see what it all meant. They knew with simple certainty that God was the bearer of this extraordinary good news. They did not know what to expect, but they were willing to make the effort to get to the manger. This is the journey of grief at Christmas.

Prayer

God, the shepherds entertained angels and received the good news. I pray for the spiritual energy to make my way to the manger to worship Christ the child. Amen.

Assurance

I will go to the manger for the experience of Christmas.
