Victimization: Day 6

“While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, ‘Who knows? The LORD may be gracious to me, and the child may live.’ But now he is dead; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.”
2 Samuel 12:22-23 NRSV

Thought

Uncharacteristic behavior is part of grief. It is, in fact, an inalienable right of grief. You may feel irrational or scarcely sane. You are not yourself. It is not unusual to weep uncontrollably and reject the comfort of others. Perhaps you refuse to take care of yourself. The narrative suggests that David returned to his routine easily and quickly. More likely, the biblical timeline of events is abridged. However, as his grief subsided, it is clear that David gradually resumed a semblance of normalcy. David knew with certainty that the child would not return to him. He was equally certain that he would be with the child again. David affirmed his faith in eternal life.

Prayer

God, I am encouraged by the example of David. Like him, I trust in your compassionate care for me. Amen.

Assurance

I will be reunited with those I love who have died.
